Can the PSN version of GTA IV: Ballad of Gay Tony play online with people who have the Complete Edition disk?

I have the complete edition disk of GTA IV with the expansions on the disk. my buddy only has the regular version of GTA IV. If he downloads the expansions from PSN, can we play online together? I heard somwhere that the digital version doesn't work with the disk version for some reason.
