1st you need to sign up to Rockstar social club.

then you need to complete the list of 10 tasks required for the unlocks, the R8 being the 3rd %26amp; final. (EDIT - task list is actually called license test)

tasks include - earn $1 million, driving on 2 wheels for 10 miles (car), wheelie 15 miles, hit 1000 other racers, hit 10,000 objects %26amp; more. The worse is 5000 miles.

I did most in story mode but did the last 2500 miles on free roam - freeways/bike/no traffic. boring as hell but as i have the R8 unlocked, it was worth it.
